Gaining Speed

Now we knew the framework within which we’ll design, we began site and building massing studies. We organized the building mass by arranging volumetric representations of our program into various configurations. Each, while similar, played up certain dynamics in different ways. While lighting was a key focus in all designs and lead to some similar design decisions (Nathan laid his plan out around a central courtyard, and I laid mine around an atrium), we presented several options for circulation within the building as well as different relationships between labs, classrooms, and administration.

From these general massing studies, we got a look at how the building’s form would sit on site and could begin to design the appearance we wanted.

Next step: begin to design our structure’s appearance, and finalize a mass we like!
